Getting around Destin absolutely requires the use of a car.  I spent the better part of my first two months here without one and it felt almost like house arrest.  Well, house arrest with a beach and golf course within walking distance.  There are summer shuttle buses that go to and from most apartment complexes to the beach, but these are not very reliable and often crowded.

In order to visit the hidden spots or take a day trip to the numerous beaches and parks in the area, budget that extra amount for a car.
